Horray L.A.

Hooray L.a.

In 1981, Bob Baker staged his love letter to Los Angeles.

With Alton Wood, King Hall, Roy Raymond and John Leland, Bob crafted what has been cited as a ‘masterpiece’ - an enduring portrait of the city entitled ‘LA OLE!’

Starting with song and dance in historic Olvera St. with dinosaurs and skeletons, all the way through the limelight of Hollywood! The show transports its audience with scenery crafted by John Leland and spectacular light effects designed by Richard Shuler. The show brings life to the people and places of the city of Angels!

After 25 years without a public performance, the Bob Baker Marionette Theater is proud to once more present this fantastic production! Join us for this edutainment extravaganza featuring 100s of Bob Baker’s hand crafted marionettes that wiggle and shake to make you giggle and applaud.

For a limited time only, experience the 1933 Earthquake, the development of the LA freeways, the arrival of radio - all is its most entertaining form – through a puppet show.

Bob Baker's “THE CIRCUS” is an exuberant, red-and-white-striped, golden vignette guilded, cotton candy scented, marionette theater production revival, commemorating the intrinsic joy and behemoth spectacle of a classic traveling circus, as envisioned by celebrated puppet master (and carnival enthusiast), Mr. Bob Baker. Widely known as one of Mr. Baker’s most show-stopping productions, “THE CIRCUS” rip-roaringly encapsulates all that amazes under the Big Top; each acrobatic insignia, exotic animal performer and sideshow salient are brought to life through the story-telling wonderment of puppetry on strings and musical revue.

“THE CIRCUS” was originally developed in the 1940’s and staged as an elaborate traveling show, enjoyed by hundreds of adoring audiences and covering Los Angeles County and surrounding vicinities.  When Mr. Baker transformed his whimsical vision into 1963’s brick-and-mortar Bob Baker Marionette Theater in Downtown, Los Angeles, “THE CIRCUS” was reimagined for the exciting specifications of Mr. Baker’s new home theater. It set an impressive tone for the early roster of many now-beloved productions found inside Bob Baker’s famous “living theater” and is credited for its exemplary artistry and craftsmanship in marionette design. In this elaborate and ambitious show revival, the Bob Baker Marionette Theater wishes to edutain and inspire audiences of every age with a fantastical celebration of a long-lost and culturally ingrained performance art through its own specialized medium of unusual art form: marionette puppetry.

THIS IS THE STORY OF
"SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT"

crowposter.jpg

THE THEME.... "There's no business like show business"... And there's no show like "SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT."  This marionette musical is delightfully mad..wonderfully imaginative..and the best lyric review in the theater.   Produced in Hollywood by Bob Baker Productions, it has the scope of a Broadway musical...plus the Wonderland touch.

THE AUDIENCE.... "SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT" is to adults a satirical comedy.  To Children...it is the fantastic world of make believe come true.  It is a rare blend of pure entertainment holding no audience limitations.

THE SETTING....The most enchanting place on Earth...A place that exists in every child's imagination..and is a warm glow in the secret heart of the adult.  A farm where everything...trees,  flowers, animals, have human emotions and feelings.  Remember this place...it once belonged only to you.

THE STORY....A glamorous chicken, MISS CLARISSA, as she was billed on Broadway, has retired from the theater.  She will live..according to her last press release...on her "Estate" surrounded by admirers and lovingly cared for by her faithful retainers.  The truth is..that Miss Clarissa, to her chagrin, is now laying eggs on a farm instead of Broadway..and she views her "twilight years" with alarm.  Her "faithful retainers"..Mama and Papa Goat..prove that Clarissa may accept her social security checks with aplomb secure in the thought that "Broadway is not all that glitters."

THE CAST....In addition to Miss Clarissa and Mama and Papa Goat we have spared no expense in satirizing those least likely to admit they could be satirized.  Our ingenue, Miss Petunia, has a flower-like quality..and she plays in the theatrical tradition of Camille.  Our leading man...Pierre Rabbit..is a hare of another color.  Pierre is a strolling player who draws his audience into his characterization of a portrait painter.  Better beware Pierre..you will find yourself playing straight man to a molasses laden accent from New Orleans.  Les Fox...whom you may associate with other leading exponents of the dance... adds another dimension to..The Tango.  Two stars of the Twenties...The Dodo Sisters..give evidence that neither they..nor the Charleston is extinct with the capable assistance of Aloysius Crow.  In Guest Stars appearances are the justly famous Tallulah Cow and Bull Frog.  Bull does his incredible soft shoe number..and you all know Tallulah.

IN CAMEO NUMBERS....Bumble Bee..who appears, despite her allergy to flowers with her waltzing daisies.  SCARE CROW AND LADY LOVE... the dance team Arthur Murray talks about..in their moonlight dance.  Our ballerinas in the ballet of the woods..and the fresh lilting voices of our ONION CHORUS.

IN CLOSING...."SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT"...is something to see.
